Where it came from
The Island card from The Brothers' War set, released in 2022, serves as part of a cycle of basic lands designed to reflect the industrial, artifact-heavy aesthetic of the set’s narrative. The Brothers' War recounts the foundational conflict in Magic: The Gathering lore between the artificer brothers Urza and Mishra, and this specific card features artwork by Wisnu Tan that emphasizes a stylized, mechanical interpretation of a landscape.
The design of these cards was part of a broader thematic effort to immerse players in the world of Dominaria's past, utilizing a distinct visual language to differentiate the set from modern-day card releases. The reception focused on how the art balanced the traditional utility of a basic land with the intricate, steampunk-inspired machinery central to the set's identity, making it a functional piece of world-building for players and collectors alike.
