Where it came from
Tocasia's Welcome was released in late 2022 as part of the Magic: The Gathering set The Brothers' War. The card depicts Tocasia, a legendary archaeologist and mentor to the iconic artificers Urza and Mishra, set against the backdrop of the archaeological excavations on the island of Argoth that precipitated the catastrophic conflict between her two pupils.
The card was illustrated by Donato Giancola, an artist renowned for his classical approach to fantasy illustration. Giancola aimed to capture the intellectual curiosity and academic atmosphere surrounding Tocasia's research, focusing on the discovery of ancient power stones. The design reflects her role as a bridge between historical knowledge and the technological escalation that defined the era, and it was generally well-received by players for its thematic resonance and its utility in decks that focus on creature-based card advantage.
