Where it came from
Mocking Doppelganger was released in 2022 as part of the Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate expansion. This set was designed to integrate the flavor and mechanics of Dungeons & Dragons into the Magic: The Gathering ecosystem, specifically catering to the social and multiplayer-focused Commander format. The card's design focus centers on the classic D&D concept of a shapeshifting creature that mirrors the traits of its prey, utilizing blue-aligned magic to incentivize combat interaction.
The artwork was illustrated by Evyn Fong, who aimed to capture the uncanny and unsettling aesthetic of a creature mid-transformation. By depicting the doppelganger as it steals the identity of a battlefield threat, the visual narrative emphasizes the card's mechanical utility as a defensive and offensive stabilizer. Upon release, it was well-received by players for its efficiency in replicating powerful permanents, securing its place as a reliable utility choice in blue Commander decks.
