Where it came from
Mocking Doppelganger was released in 2022 as part of the Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate expansion. This set was designed to integrate the flavor and mechanics of Dungeons & Dragons into the Magic: The Gathering trading card game, specifically targeting the Commander multiplayer format. The card itself represents a shapeshifting creature capable of mimicking other battlefield entities, a trope deeply rooted in D&D lore.
The artwork for this card was created by illustrator Zezhou Chen, who focused on the unsettling, fluid nature of a doppelganger amidst a chaotic magical confrontation. The design was received by players as a highly efficient tool for blue-aligned decks, praised for its ability to neutralize threats by creating a copy of the most powerful creature on the board. Its inclusion in the set helped bridge the gap between tabletop roleplaying mechanics and the strategic requirements of card gaming.
