Where it came from
Monstrous Rage is a red aura spell featured in the 2023 Magic: The Gathering expansion, Wilds of Eldraine. The set draws heavy inspiration from classic fairy tales and Arthurian legend, reimagining these folklore elements through a whimsical, high-fantasy lens. This card serves as a thematic piece within the set's broader exploration of the 'Roles' mechanic, which allows players to enchant creatures to grant them specific buffs, mirroring the transformative nature of storybook characters.
The card’s artwork was illustrated by Justyna Dura, who captured the chaotic, transformative energy of a creature succumbing to a bestial frenzy. In the game's competitive landscape, the card has been received as a high-efficiency tool for aggressive deck strategies due to its ability to grant both a significant power boost and 'trample,' a keyword that allows damage to carry over to an opponent. It remains a staple in several formats where red-based combat strategies are prominent.
