What it does
Whenever you cast a creature spell with power 5 or greater, discover X, where X is that spell's mana value. (Exile cards from the top of your library until you exile a nonland card with that mana value or less. Cast it without paying its mana cost or put it into your hand. Put the rest on the bottom in a random order.)

Where it came from
Monstrous Vortex was released in 2024 as part of the Modern Horizons 3 set for the trading card game Magic: The Gathering. This set was designed specifically for the Modern format, aiming to introduce powerful new mechanics and high-impact cards that could shift the competitive landscape. The card features art by Igor Kieryluk, whose work often leans into the visceral, high-fantasy aesthetic characteristic of the game's creature-centric designs.
The card is representative of the modern design philosophy of Magic: The Gathering, which often utilizes complex trigger-based mechanics to reward players for casting high-mana spells. Within the community, Monstrous Vortex was noted for its synergy with 'cascade' and 'discovery' style effects, finding a home in various commander and constructed formats where players look to cheat large creatures into play. It remains a notable example of Wizards of the Coast's effort to blend thematic chaos with technical gameplay depth.
