Provenance

Where it came from

The Moriok Rigger was released in 2004 as part of the Fifth Dawn set, the final expansion in the Mirrodin block for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Set on the artificial metal plane of Mirrodin, the card depicts one of the Moriok, a faction of humans who survived on the plane by integrating mechanical augmentations into their bodies, reflecting the set's central theme of artifact-heavy gameplay and the fusion of biology with machinery.

The card's illustration was created by artist Carl Critchlow, whose work is characterized by a distinctively gritty, textured aesthetic that defined much of the early 2000s Magic visual identity. Critchlow captured the Rigger in a moment of functional preparation, emphasizing the industrial, scavenged nature of the Moriok culture, which resonated with players as a quintessential example of the block's pervasive artifact synergy and mechanical flavor.
