Provenance

Where it came from

The Witch-Maw Nephilim was released in 2006 as part of the Guildpact expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As a rare creature from a set focused on the guilds of Ravnica, it represents the chaotic, four-color identity of the Nephilim, ancient creatures awakened by the city's shifting magical undercurrents. These cards were designed to explore the concept of four-color combinations, which at the time were a novelty in the game's mechanics.

The artwork was illustrated by Jim Murray, who captured the creature's grotesque, multi-limbed nature through a visceral and unsettling aesthetic. The design sought to convey a sense of primal, incomprehensible power that existed outside the standard hierarchical structures of the Ravnican guilds. While the card is technically complex and occupies a niche space in competitive play, it remains a notable piece of art and lore within the Ravnica cycle.
