Mox Ruby

The International Collectors' Edition (ICE) Mox Ruby was released in 1993 as part of a non-tournament-legal boxed set produced by Wizards of the Coast. Intended primarily for display and home play, this edition featured gold-bordered backs and square corners to distinguish the cards from the limited-run Alpha and Beta sets that had ignited the popularity of Magic: The Gathering earlier that year. The set provided players who had missed out on the initial, highly limited printings with an opportunity to own iconic cards that were already becoming prohibitively expensive on the secondary market.

The Mox Ruby card design, originally illustrated by Dan Frazier, is one of the foundational pieces of Magic's power nine. Frazier’s artwork was intended to evoke a sense of ancient, high-fantasy artifacts, utilizing a minimalist yet evocative style that became synonymous with the game's early identity. While the Collectors' Edition cards were never permitted in official tournament play, they are widely appreciated today for their historical significance and the distinct aesthetic of their gold-bordered presentation, which marks a specific moment in the game’s transition from a niche hobby to a global phenomenon.
