Provenance

Where it came from

The International Collectors' Edition (ICE) was released by Wizards of the Coast in 1993 as a limited-run boxed set intended for display rather than tournament play. It was created to provide collectors with a high-quality reproduction of the game's earliest cards, which had become difficult to acquire. These cards are easily distinguished from standard versions by their square corners and a gold-foil 'Collectors' Edition' stamp printed on the reverse side.

Lightning Bolt, originally illustrated by Christopher Rush for the Alpha set, remains one of the most iconic spells in the game's history. Rush’s design captured the raw, elemental intensity of red magic, becoming a defining visual for the card's mechanical simplicity and power. Within the ICE set, the card retains its original aesthetic intent, serving as a pristine example of Rush's early contributions to the game's evolving visual identity.
