Where it came from
Karoo Meerkat was released in 1996 as part of the Mirage expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, Mirage served as the first set in a block structure, designed to provide a cohesive drafting experience and introduce new mechanics like phasing and flanking. The set drew significant thematic inspiration from African landscapes and folklore, a departure from the high-fantasy tropes that dominated the earlier years of the game's history.
The card features an illustration by artist Anson Maddocks, who was a foundational contributor to the visual identity of early Magic: The Gathering. Maddocks utilized his signature style to depict the creature in its naturalistic, desert-dwelling habitat. While the card is often remembered by players for its utility in specific limited environments rather than competitive tournament play, it remains a notable example of the artistic shift toward diverse ecological themes that defined the Mirage era.
