Multani's Presence

Multani's Presence was released in 1999 as part of the Urza's Legacy expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set served as the second installment in the Urza's Saga block, a narrative-heavy cycle that delved into the complex history of the artificer Urza and his conflicts within the multiverse. The card depicts the entity Multani, an ancient and powerful elemental guardian of Yavimaya, whose design was intended to emphasize the dense, primal connection between nature and magic during the lore's shifting ecological themes.

The artwork for this card was created by illustrator Eric Peterson, who was tasked with capturing the mystical and imposing essence of Multani. The visual direction sought to portray the character as an extension of the forest itself, utilizing earthy tones and organic forms to differentiate it from the metallic, industrial aesthetic dominating much of the Urza's Legacy set. Upon its release, the card was generally received as a niche utility piece, valued more by players focused on thematic tribal decks than by the competitive tournament scene of the era.
