Where it came from
Munitions Expert was originally printed in the Modern Horizons set in 2019 as a tribute to the Goblin tribe’s destructive utility, designed to provide Rakdos-colored decks with a repeatable removal effect. It emerged from a set specifically engineered to introduce cards directly into the Modern format, prioritizing high-synergy creatures that reward players for expanding their board state with Goblin tokens or recurring ETB triggers.
The Timeshifted version featured in Modern Horizons 2 uses a nostalgic 'retro frame' aesthetic, intentionally evoking the layout of early Magic: The Gathering cards from the 1990s. This design choice was intended to satisfy collector demand for classic visual styling while maintaining the functional mechanical updates required for contemporary play, and it was generally well-received by fans who appreciate the aesthetic continuity of the game's history.
