Where it came from
Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer was introduced in the 2021 Magic: The Gathering expansion Modern Horizons 2. Designed by the Wizards of the Coast development team, the card was intended to provide a high-powered, aggressive creature for eternal formats, drawing inspiration from the iconic creature type 'Monkey Pirate' and the character's narrative role in the lore of the plane of Ixalan. The card’s design focuses on tempo and resource advantage, allowing players to cast their opponent's spells, which solidified its reputation as a formidable card in competitive play.
The artwork for the card was illustrated by Simon Dominic, who sought to capture the character's mischievous and agile personality. Upon release, the card received significant attention from the community for its efficiency and impact on the Modern and Legacy formats. It was subsequently included in the Modern Horizons 2 Timeshifts subset, which featured special card frames and aesthetics that paid homage to the history of the game, further cementing its status as a sought-after collectible among players and enthusiasts.
