Where it came from
Muse's Encouragement was released in 2021 as part of the Strixhaven: School of Mages expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Specifically featured within the Secrets of Strixhaven subset, the card leans into the academic and arcane theme of the set, which depicts a university for mages where different colleges emphasize unique magical disciplines. The card was designed to support the set's focus on casting sorceries and instants, mechanical themes central to the identity of the Strixhaven campus.
The artwork for the card was created by illustrator Randy Vargas, who employed a vibrant, painterly style to convey the scholarly atmosphere of the institution. By capturing a moment of mystical inspiration, the design aims to evoke the feeling of magical study and academic growth inherent to the plane of Arcavios. Upon release, the card was noted for its utility in limited formats and its contribution to the overall aesthetic cohesion of the Strixhaven collection.
