Where it came from
Mycoid Shepherd was released as a promotional card through the Magic: The Gathering DCI program, specifically appearing as a foil rare for the 2008 tournament season. The card originates from the Shards of Alara block, where it served as a powerful green creature capable of returning fallen creatures to the battlefield, embodying the resilient and cyclical nature of the Naya shard.
The illustration was created by artist Kev Walker, who is known for his gritty, detailed style that often emphasizes the monstrous and organic elements of creature design. In this instance, Walker captured the shepherd as a towering, fungal entity, leaning into the surreal biology of the multiverse. The artwork was well-regarded for its distinctive aesthetic, which helped the card become a sought-after piece for players who valued both its functional utility in green-based decks and its visual appeal as a foil promotional item.
