What it does
Whenever this creature or another creature you control with power 5 or greater dies, you may gain 5 life.
As pure mana flooded across the shards, it brought a sense of unity even to Jund's vicious food chain.

Where it came from
Mycoid Shepherd was released in 2009 as part of the Alara Reborn expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This set was unique in the game's history as the first to consist entirely of multi-colored cards, designed to represent the fusion of the fragmented shards of the plane of Alara into a single, unified world. The card reflects the Jund shard’s focus on the cycle of life and death, leveraging its ability to return fallen creatures to the battlefield to emphasize the theme of regeneration and organic growth.
The illustration was created by artist Jesper Ejsing, whose work often features high-fantasy creatures with a tactile, earthen aesthetic. Ejsing chose to depict the Shepherd as a hulking, fungal-infused entity, visually anchoring it within the swampy, predatory landscapes of the Jund region. Upon its debut, the card was received primarily as a flavorful component of creature-heavy strategies, noted by players for its durability and its ability to provide a recurring threat in mid-range deck compositions.
