Where it came from
Myrel, Shield of Argive was released in the 2022 Magic: The Gathering expansion The Brothers' War, a set that revisits one of the most pivotal conflicts in the game's lore. The card depicts a legendary human soldier from the city of Argive, designed to serve as a strategic linchpin for decks centered around artifact creatures and token production. The narrative context positions Myrel as a defender of her people during the relentless struggle between the artificers Urza and Mishra.
The character design reflects the stoic, protective nature of the Argive military, with the artwork emphasizing her role as a leader who inspires reinforcements on the battlefield. The card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, whose work is known for its evocative lighting and character-focused compositions. Upon release, it was well-received by players for its ability to dominate board states through its passive ability to lock down opposing artifacts and spells during combat, making it a staple in various constructed formats.
