Where it came from
Myrel, Shield of Argive was introduced as part of The Brothers' War expansion for Magic: The Gathering, released in late 2022. The card depicts a legendary human soldier from the lore of Argive, a central faction in the conflict between the brothers Urza and Mishra. This specific iteration is a promotional version, often distributed through Wizards of the Coast's organized play programs to reward players for participation in store-level events.
The character design reflects the stoic, defensive nature of the Argivian forces, emphasizing heavy armor and a commanding presence on the battlefield. Illustrators for the set aimed to evoke a gritty, industrial aesthetic consistent with the expansion's mechanical theme of massive war machines and artifact-heavy warfare. Upon its release, the card was widely received by the player base for its powerful ability to generate tokens and lock down opponent artifacts, quickly becoming a staple in competitive formats.
