Where it came from
Mystical Teachings first appeared in the Time Spiral expansion, designed to evoke the high-fantasy aesthetic of early Magic: The Gathering sets while introducing a powerful mechanic known as Flashback. It was created to provide blue-aligned decks with a versatile, repeatable utility spell that rewards players for carefully managing their graveyard as a resource. The card is renowned for its efficiency, allowing players to search for specific instant-speed answers in a way that remains a staple in eternal competitive formats.
The Foundations version, marked as collector number 594, serves as a contemporary reprint intended to introduce the card's mechanics to a new generation of players. By including it in a foundational set, the developers maintained the card's original intent as a reliable instructional tool for deck-building strategy. The art update captures the quintessential wizardly theme of the original, balancing the game's evolving visual language with the classic utility that has defined the card since its inception.
