Where it came from
Mystical Teachings was originally printed in the 2006 set Time Spiral, designed as a thematic callback to the game's early history and complex mechanics. The card draws upon the lore of the Tolarian Academy, representing the search for arcane knowledge within the complex time-bending narrative of the set. Its design, featuring a tutor effect that searches the library for an instant card, highlights the strategic depth often associated with blue-aligned control decks in competitive play.
The 2017 Modern Masters version features updated art by Nils Hamm, whose illustration style captures a sense of ethereal discovery and ancient wisdom. This printing was part of a curated set intended to provide players with access to staple cards from the Modern format, and the inclusion of Mystical Teachings provided a key utility piece for graveyard-based and spell-heavy archetypes. It remains a respected choice among players for its flexibility and ability to generate card advantage in longer matches.
