Mystical Teachings was originally introduced in the 2006 Time Spiral expansion, designed as part of a cycle of spells that heavily utilized the 'flashback' mechanic. It was created to provide control decks with a versatile utility tool, allowing players to tutor for specific instants or flash spells from their library. The card quickly became a staple in various formats, particularly those that reward graveyard interaction and reactive gameplay, solidifying its place as a quintessential toolbox card in magic theory.

The Modern Masters 2017 version features the original evocative illustration by Ron Spears. Spears, a veteran artist for the game, leaned into a gothic, academic aesthetic, depicting a cloaked figure surrounded by floating, ethereal glyphs that capture the card's theme of arcane discovery. Upon its inclusion in the 2017 reprint set, the card was widely welcomed by the player base for its role in maintaining a balanced draft environment and ensuring that players had consistent access to essential interactive pieces.
