Natural Affinity

Natural Affinity was released in 1999 as part of the Mercadian Masques set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed during a period of transition in the game's mechanics, the set focused on themes of commerce and deception, set on the plane of Mercadia. As an instant card, Natural Affinity was designed to catch opponents off guard, allowing players to transform all lands on the battlefield into 2/2 creatures until the end of the turn, effectively turning the game's foundational resource into a high-risk combat force.

The card’s striking illustration was provided by Pete Venters, a prolific artist who contributed significantly to the game's aesthetic during the late 1990s. Venters’ work on this piece captures the chaotic, organic transformation of the landscape into living entities, a visual metaphor for the card's disruptive impact on gameplay.
