The card was selected for inclusion in the Ninth Edition core set, which was released in 2005 as a landmark collection intended to provide a stable foundation for the standard play environment. The core sets of this era functioned as a rotating anthology of iconic mechanics, intended to balance gameplay while offering familiar tools to veteran players.

The artwork for this version was illustrated by Christopher Rush, one of the most prolific and foundational artists in the history of the game.
