What it does
Each player who controls six or more lands chooses five lands they control and sacrifices the rest. Each player who controls four or fewer lands may search their library for up to X basic land cards and put them onto the battlefield, where X is five minus the number of lands they control. Then each player who searched their library this way shuffles.

Where it came from
Natural Balance was released in 1996 as part of the Mirage expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Mirage was a landmark set in the game's history, as it was the first to be designed as a standalone draftable environment rather than a collection of cards meant to supplement existing strategies. Developed by a team led by Bill Rose, the set introduced mechanics like phasing and flanking, aiming to shift the game’s balance toward more tactical, board-focused play.
The card’s artwork was illustrated by veteran fantasy artist Rebecca Guay, whose distinctive, ethereal watercolor style became a hallmark of the era's aesthetic. Her design for Natural Balance emphasizes the interconnectedness of the game's nature-themed cards, reflecting the card's function of resetting land counts to maintain parity. Upon release, the card was received as a niche utility tool, valued more for its thematic resonance and unique art than for its presence in competitive tournament deck lists.
