Where it came from
Naya Sojourners was released in 2009 as part of the Alara Reborn expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set was unique in that every card included was multicolored, representing the final convergence of the five shards of Alara into a single plane. The card depicts the Naya shard, which in the game's lore is characterized by vast, sun-drenched jungles and a focus on gargantuan creatures and communal strength.
The artwork was created by illustrator Matt Cavotta, who designed the Sojourners to embody the Naya shard's mechanical identity, which emphasizes the interaction between large creatures and power-based effects. The card was designed to support the 'cascade' mechanic featured in the Alara block, allowing players to bridge the gap between mid-range creature support and board state stabilization, and it was generally received as a reliable staple for limited play formats during its release.
