Provenance

Where it came from

The Enigma Sphinx was released in 2009 as part of the Alara Reborn set, the final installment of the Shards of Alara block for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set was unique for being the first in the game's history to consist entirely of multi-colored cards, reflecting the thematic merging of the five disparate shards of the plane of Alara back into a singular world.

The card was illustrated by the artist Dave Kendall, whose distinct, painterly style characterizes much of the set's high-fantasy aesthetic. The creature's design, which emphasizes the Sphinx's role as a master of information and time manipulation through its cascade ability, was well-received by players for its synergy with the mechanics of the Alara block, specifically rewarding those who built decks focused on cascading into lower-cost spells.
