Where it came from
Alchemist's Greeting was released in 2016 as part of the Eldritch Moon expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Set on the gothic horror-inspired plane of Innistrad, the card reflects the set's narrative focus on the encroaching influence of the Eldrazi titan Emrakul, which corrupted the local alchemy and transformed the environment into a surreal, mutated landscape.
The artwork was created by illustrator Deruchenko Alexander, who utilized a vivid, unsettling color palette to convey the chaotic energy of the spell. The design emphasizes the 'mad science' aesthetic prevalent in the set, where traditional alchemical practices are twisted by eldritch forces. Upon its release, it was noted by players as a functional piece of removal for the Limited format, praised for its efficiency within the specific mechanics of the Eldritch Moon environment.
