Provenance

Where it came from

Alchemist's Greeting was released in July 2016 as part of the Eldritch Moon expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set served as the conclusion to the Shadows over Innistrad block, depicting a gothic horror plane descending into madness due to the influence of the Eldrazi titan Emrakul. The card was designed as a common-rarity sorcery to support the madness mechanic, a keyword that allows players to cast spells for a reduced cost if they discard them, effectively turning the card into a thematic representation of the desperate and chaotic sorcery found within the transformed town of Thraben.

The artwork was provided by Jakub Kasper, whose work frequently captures the dark, visceral aesthetic characteristic of the Innistrad setting. Kasper focused on the grotesque transformation of the local alchemists, using sharp lighting and muted tones to emphasize the unsettling mutation and physical decay spreading across the plane. Upon its release, the card was widely received by players as a functional, flavorful addition to Limited formats, effectively illustrating the set's central tension between traditional alchemy and the encroaching eldritch corruption.
