Where it came from
Neyali, Suns' Vanguard was released in 2023 as part of the Phyrexia: All Will Be One Commander set. Designed specifically for the Rebellion Rising deck, this card represents a focal point for white-red token strategies, providing a tactical advantage by granting double strike to attacking tokens and allowing players to cast cards from exile. The card reflects the broader themes of the set, emphasizing the high-stakes conflict between the Mirran resistance and the encroaching Phyrexian forces.
The character design and illustration were crafted to embody the resilience of the Mirran survivors. The artistic direction emphasizes the aesthetic of resistance, utilizing bold red and gold tones to distinguish Neyali as a heroic vanguard against the cold, biomechanical aesthetic prevalent elsewhere in the Phyrexia expansion. Upon release, the card was well-received by the Commander community for its cohesive synergy with token-focused playstyles and its ability to provide much-needed card advantage in its color identity.
