Where it came from
Neyali, Suns' Vanguard was introduced as a central legendary creature for the Rebellion Rising Commander deck, released in 2023 as part of the Phyrexia: All Will Be One set. The card was designed to anchor a Boros-colored strategy focused on token creation and combat aggression, reflecting the desperate, high-stakes resistance efforts of the Mirran survivors fighting against the Phyrexians on their home plane.
The card's artwork and mechanics were crafted by the Wizards of the Coast design team to capture the tactical, front-line nature of the Mirran resistance. With its ability to provide double strike to tokens, Neyali was intended to reward players for wide, aggressive board states, and it was generally well-received by the Commander community as a focused, effective commander that streamlined the red-white token archetype.
