Where it came from
Neyali, Suns' Vanguard was introduced as part of the Phyrexia: All Will Be One Commander set, released in early 2023. This card serves as the face commander for the Rebellion Rising deck, which focuses on the Boros color identity of red and white. The character represents the resistance movement within Mirrodin, specifically highlighting the desperate struggle against the encroaching Phyrexian corruption that defines the setting of this expansion.
The card was illustrated by Wisnu Tan, who crafted Neyali to embody the tactical leadership of the Mirran survivors. The design focuses on mechanics that reward attacking with token creatures, reflecting the flavor of a coordinated vanguard pushing against overwhelming odds. The reception among the Magic: The Gathering community was largely positive, particularly for players who enjoy aggressive strategies and equipment-based synergies within the Commander format.
