Where it came from
The Nightkin Ambusher card was released as part of the Fallout set for Magic: The Gathering in 2024. It represents the iconic Nightkin, a tragic and formidable variant of Super Mutants from the Fallout video game series, who are known for their reliance on Stealth Boys and their recurring bouts of schizophrenia induced by prolonged usage. The card mechanics and flavor text draw directly from the tactical, hidden-threat nature of these enemies in the post-apocalyptic wasteland.
The card’s illustration was crafted by artist Lie Setiawan, who focused on capturing the eerie, distorted silhouette and heavy armor characteristic of the Nightkin. The design reflects the broader aesthetic of the Fallout Commander decks, which aim to blend the world-building of the Bethesda franchise with the established visual language of Magic: The Gathering. Upon release, the set was well received for its faithfulness to the source material and its integration of familiar video game mechanics into the tabletop format.
