Flying (This creature can't be blocked except by creatures with flying or reach.)

Where it came from
The Nightmare card was released as part of the 1993 Magic: The Gathering Collectors' Edition, a non-tournament-legal boxed set designed for collectors and those who wanted to experience the full original Alpha set without the scarcity of the base game. It was produced by Wizards of the Coast to satisfy demand for the game's earliest cards, utilizing the original artwork and card mechanics that defined the game's initial launch.
The artwork for Nightmare was created by Anson Maddocks, a core illustrator for early Magic sets who was known for his distinct, often surreal style. His design depicts a skeletal, winged horse, capturing the grim and high-fantasy aesthetic that characterized the game's early identity. The card was well-received by players for its iconic status and has since become a staple of early-game nostalgia.
