Where it came from
The Nightmare card included in the Magic: The Gathering Welcome Deck 2017 was part of a strategic initiative by Wizards of the Coast to introduce new players to the game. These decks were designed to be simple, balanced, and accessible, serving as an entry point for those unfamiliar with the complex mechanics of the trading card game. By including iconic, high-impact creatures like Nightmare, the designers aimed to provide beginners with an immediate sense of the game's power fantasy and thematic depth.
Nightmare has long been a staple of the Magic: The Gathering base sets, dating back to the Alpha edition in 1993. The illustration for the 2017 iteration maintains the classic, fearsome aesthetic that has defined the creature for decades—a shadowy, skeletal steed wreathed in flames. The card’s design, which scales its power and toughness based on the number of Swamps a player controls, reflects the fundamental color philosophy of Black magic in the game, focusing on resource management and building late-game intensity.
