Where it came from
Nissa, Ascended Animist was released in the 2023 set Phyrexia: All Will Be One as a showcase card, specifically featuring a distinct borderless oil slick foil treatment. This card represents a pivotal narrative moment where the iconic planeswalker Nissa Revane is Compleated by the Phyrexians, turning her into an agent of the machine orthodoxy. The aesthetic design leans heavily into the biomechanical horror of New Phyrexia, utilizing deep blacks and oily, iridescent textures to symbolize her corruption and the overwhelming influence of the Phyrexian metal.
The card was illustrated by Donato Giancola, a renowned fantasy artist known for his painterly, classical approach to complex subject matter. Giancola aimed to capture the tragedy and transformation of the character, balancing her traditional connection to nature with the cold, rigid geometry of Phyrexian enhancement. Upon its release, the card received significant attention from both competitive players for its powerful game mechanics and collectors, who gravitated toward the unique visual direction and the thematic weight of Nissa’s departure from her original green-aligned identity.
