Where it came from
Nissa, Ascended Animist was released in 2023 as part of the Phyrexia: All Will Be One expansion. This specific card, numbered 175s, represents the planeswalker Nissa Revane during a pivotal storyline event where she is compleated—a process of transformation into a Phyrexian agent—by the forces of New Phyrexia. The card design reflects her transition into a hybrid nature-phyrexian entity, serving as a narrative centerpiece for the conflict between the Mirran resistance and the Phyrexians.
The illustrative work on this promotional version emphasizes the dark, biomechanical aesthetic synonymous with the Phyrexians. Illustrators for the set were tasked with depicting the corruption of iconic characters, balancing Nissa’s traditional elemental affinity with the jagged, metallic, and sinister textures of Phyrexian technology. The card was well-received by players for its powerful abilities and its significance in the Magic: The Gathering multiverse, marking a major character shift that generated considerable discussion within the gaming community.
