Where it came from
Nissa of Shadowed Boughs was released in 2020 as part of the Zendikar Rising expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This card portrays Nissa Revane, a popular elven planeswalker character, during a period of narrative turmoil where her alignment shifted toward green and black mana. The card was designed to highlight her connection to the plane of Zendikar and its unique land-based mechanics, specifically utilizing the Landfall keyword to reward players for playing land cards.
The artwork for this particular iteration was illustrated by Magali Villeneuve, a prominent artist in the Magic: The Gathering community known for her detailed and evocative character work. Villeneuve intended to capture the more complex, shadowed nature of Nissa during the Zendikar Rising storyline, moving away from her traditionally heroic aesthetic. Upon release, the card was widely discussed by players for its tactical utility and its significance in the ongoing character arc of one of the game's central figures.
