Where it came from
Nissa of Shadowed Boughs was released in 2020 as part of the Zendikar Rising expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This card represents the character Nissa Revane during a pivotal chapter of her narrative arc, where she is depicted with an emphasis on her connection to the lands of Zendikar after her reconciliation with the plane. The card was designed to mechanically reflect the set's landfall theme, allowing players to cheat creatures into play based on the number of lands that entered the battlefield under their control.
The illustration was created by artist Magali Villeneuve, a prominent figure in the Magic: The Gathering art community known for her expressive character work. Villeneuve focused on capturing Nissa’s determined and gritty aesthetic, moving away from her previous, more ethereal portrayals to emphasize her role as a protector of Zendikar. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players for its high power level in competitive formats, particularly for its versatility as both a threat and a recurring value engine.
