Where it came from
Nissa of Shadowed Boughs was released as a promotional card within the Zendikar Rising expansion for Magic: The Gathering, which debuted in 2020. This specific iteration serves as a planeswalker card, representing the character Nissa Revane during a pivotal narrative arc where she aligns with the forces of Zendikar. The card was designed to function within the set's unique mechanics, emphasizing land-based synergies and graveyard recursion, reflecting the character’s intimate connection to the plane's elemental mana.
The illustrative work for this version was produced by artist Aleksi Briclot, who has a long-standing history of defining the visual aesthetic of many central planeswalkers in the game. Briclot's design approach for this promo utilizes a distinctive borderless treatment, intended to highlight the character’s dynamic posture and the shadowed, atmospheric environment of the setting. Upon its release, the card was received as a sought-after collectible due to its alternate art style and its high utility in various competitive formats like Commander and Standard.
