Where it came from
Nissa's Encouragement is a sorcery card featured in the 2017 Magic: The Gathering expansion, Hour of Devastation. The set chronicles the climax of the Amonkhet block, where the dragon-god Nicol Bolas returns to the plane of Amonkhet to claim his army of Eternals. Within the narrative, this card depicts the planeswalker Nissa Revane attempting to protect the local populace as the desert world descends into apocalypse, emphasizing her role as a guardian of nature amidst the chaos.
The artwork for this piece was created by artist Igor Kieryluk, who has contributed extensively to the Magic: The Gathering visual identity. The design focuses on the ethereal, forest-aligned magic characteristic of Nissa, utilizing glowing green motifs to contrast with the harsh, sun-baked aesthetic of the Amonkhet setting. It was designed as a thematic utility card, intended to reflect Nissa's connection to the land and her support of her allies during the storyline's desperate final hours.
