Where it came from
Oasis Ritualist was released in 2017 as part of the Hour of Devastation set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Set on the desert world of Amonkhet, the card reflects the lore of a plane obsessed with trial and preparation for a catastrophic event known as the Hour of Devastation. The ritualist represents the inhabitants who channeled mana to prepare for the return of the dragon god Nicol Bolas, capturing the set's themes of desolation and religious fervor.
The card was illustrated by Victor Adame Minguez, who depicted the ritualist in a style consistent with the vibrant yet harsh aesthetic of the Amonkhet block. Mechanically, the card was designed to support ramp strategies, allowing players to generate various colors of mana to cast powerful spells. It became a notable inclusion for limited play formats, prized for its flexibility and ability to smooth out resource management during gameplay.
