Where it came from
Novice Occultist was originally printed as part of the Innistrad: Midnight Hunt set released in 2021. Designed for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game, the card reflects the set's gothic horror aesthetic, which draws heavily from classic tropes of werewolf lore and dark, occult traditions in a fictionalized Victorian-era setting.
The card features artwork by Wisnu Tan, who contributed to the set's cohesive visual identity. As a creature card with a transform mechanic, the design highlights the narrative transition from a student of the arcane to a more powerful, corrupted form, fitting the thematic emphasis on metamorphosis and the fragile boundary between humanity and darkness that defines the Innistrad plane.
