Where it came from
Architects of Will is a card featured in The List, a curated collection of reprints from throughout the history of the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This specific card originated in the Aether Revolt set, which was released in early 2017 as the second expansion in the Kaladesh block. The set was designed to reflect a narrative of rebellion against the ruling Consulate on the steampunk-inspired plane of Kaladesh, focusing on themes of invention and political upheaval.
The card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, a long-time contributor to the game known for his expressive and luminous style. In Architects of Will, Voss utilizes the vibrant, artifact-heavy aesthetic of Kaladesh to depict a Vedalken artificer manipulating energy flows. The design intended to emphasize the intellectual and mechanical precision characteristic of the Vedalken people, and upon its release, the card was received as a functional utility piece within limited and draft environments for its ability to manipulate deck composition.
