Where it came from
Oath of Ajani was released in 2017 as part of the Aether Revolt expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As part of the 'Oath' cycle introduced during the Battle for Zendikar block, these cards represent key planeswalkers pledging to protect the Multiverse. This particular entry depicts Ajani Goldmane, the leonin mentor, following the events of the Kaladesh storyline where he joins the Gatewatch to counter the influence of Nicol Bolas.
The card was illustrated by Kieran Yanner, a prolific artist for the game known for his expressive character work. Yanner’s design captures Ajani’s stoic presence and thematic connection to the Selesnya Conclave’s color philosophy. Upon its release, the card was analyzed by players for its ability to provide early-game support for planeswalker-heavy decks, fitting into the strategic environment of the Aether Revolt meta.
