Where it came from
Oath of Ajani was released as part of the Aether Revolt set in early 2017, serving as a pivotal narrative card in the Magic: The Gathering storyline. It depicts the leonin planeswalker Ajani Goldmane joining the Gatewatch, a group of heroes dedicated to protecting the multiverse. This specific version is a promotional printing, distinguished by its unique artwork and the set’s distinct expansion symbol, which was distributed through sanctioned tournament play to reward engaged players.
The artwork for this card was created by artist Wesley Burt, who was tasked with capturing the solemnity and weight of Ajani joining the coalition. Burt utilized a warm, heroic color palette to emphasize the character's commitment to his new allies. The card was well-received by the player base for its thematic resonance and its utility in decks featuring the 'planeswalker' mechanic, solidifying its place as a recognizable piece of modern Magic lore.
