Where it came from
Oath of Gideon was released in early 2016 as part of the Magic: The Gathering set Oath of the Gatewatch. The card represents a pivotal narrative moment in the game's lore, depicting the protagonist Gideon Jura forming the core group of heroes known as the Gatewatch. Mechanically, the card functions as a planeswalker support spell, intended to bolster white-aligned deck strategies by creating ally tokens and providing a static buff to other planeswalkers.
The card’s art was illustrated by Wesley Burt, who aimed to capture the solemnity and camaraderie of the bond being forged between the characters. The visual direction focuses on Gideon's stoic commitment to protecting the multiverse, a theme central to the set's cooperative mission. Upon release, the card was received as a versatile staple for casual and commander-format players, valued primarily for its thematic significance and its functional utility in token-heavy archetypes.
