Oath of Ghouls

Oath of Ghouls was released in 1998 as part of the Exodus expansion, the final set in the Rath Cycle for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Mechanically, the card was designed to capitalize on the graveyard-maturation themes prevalent in the set, providing a symmetrical effect that allowed players to return creatures from their graveyards to their hands. The card emerged during a period where Wizards of the Coast was aggressively experimenting with enchantment mechanics that rewarded players for managing their discarded resources.

The card features artwork by the noted fantasy illustrator Brom, whose dark, atmospheric style became synonymous with the gothic aesthetic of late 1990s Magic cards. Brom’s depiction of necrotic imagery aligned with the expansion’s focus on the Phyrexians and the desolation of the plane of Rath. While it was not a centerpiece of competitive tournament play at the time of its release, the card is remembered by collectors for its distinct visual contribution to the game’s early artistic identity and its thematic role within the black-aligned necromancy cards of the era.
