Where it came from
The Oath of Gideon was originally introduced in the 2016 Oath of the Gatewatch expansion, serving as a pivotal narrative card in the Magic: The Gathering storyline. It represents the moment Gideon Jura formally pledges his commitment to the newly formed Gatewatch, a coalition of Planeswalkers dedicated to protecting the Multiverse from extra-planar threats. This specific version is a reprint featured in the Commander Masters set, which was designed to celebrate and support the popular Commander format by highlighting iconic legendary creatures and essential support cards from the game's history.
The card's design features art by Willian Murai, who captured the stoic, heroic nature of Gideon Jura standing amidst the crystalline landscape of Zendikar. The art style emphasizes the character's signature sun-crest shield and his role as a stalwart protector. Upon its initial release, the card was well-received by players for its utility in 'superfriends' style decks, where its ability to create a token and provide loyalty counters to Planeswalkers offered a significant strategic advantage in multiplayer settings.
