Provenance

Where it came from

The Octopus token was released in 2015 as part of the Battle for Zendikar set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Tokens in this set were introduced as supplemental cards to represent creatures created by spell effects, appearing in booster packs in place of the standard land card. The design focus for Zendikar tokens was to immerse players in the plane's unique, adventure-themed aesthetic, characterized by its shifting landscapes and monstrous inhabitants.

The artwork for this token was created by Greg Staples, a long-time illustrator for the franchise known for his moody and textured digital painting style. Staples was tasked with rendering the creature in a way that felt both formidable and organic, fitting the set's high-fantasy tone. Upon release, it was well-received by players for its detailed rendering, quickly becoming a staple in decks utilizing cards that generate token creatures.
