Where it came from
Octopus Umbra originated in the Commander 2018 expansion, designed as part of the strategy-focused Magic: The Gathering product line aimed at multiplayer formats. The card utilizes the 'Umbra' mechanic, which was first introduced in the Rise of the Eldrazi set to represent spiritual manifestations that offer protective armor to creatures on the battlefield. Its inclusion in 'The List'—a rotating selection of cards curated by Wizards of the Coast for inclusion in Set Boosters—serves to reintroduce mechanically distinct cards from past sets to a new generation of players.
The illustration by Nils Hamm captures the ethereal and tentacled nature of the creature, consistent with his signature dark, painterly style that frequently defines the visual language of Magic: The Gathering's more monstrous designs. The card is noted for its utility in 'Voltron' style deck builds, where players focus on enchanting a single creature to overwhelm opponents. While not a centerpiece of competitive play, it remains a recognized example of the game's creature-enchantment design space.
