Where it came from
Ojutai, Soul of Winter was released in early 2015 as part of the Fate Reforged set for Magic: The Gathering. As a dragon lord of the Jeskai Way, the card was designed to represent the wisdom and formidable cold-magic mastery of the dragon Ojutai, a central figure in the lore of the Tarkir plane. The promo version, marked with the collector number 156s, was distributed through various organized play initiatives, featuring distinct alternate art that highlights the dragon's imposing stature against a wintry backdrop.
The illustration was crafted by artist Chase Stone, who is widely recognized for his painterly and dynamic style within the game's aesthetic. Stone intended to emphasize the creature's glacial presence and regal, meditative nature, distancing the design from the more aggressive, feral dragon archetypes common in fantasy. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players for its tactical utility in control-focused strategies, and its unique foil-stamped promo treatment became a sought-after piece for collectors of thematic dragon-centric sets.
